Daily Mail Outdoes Itself With Fear Factor Overload

Check this photo - looks pretty horrific really:

And as this article states:

Washington is laid to waste. The Capitol is a blackened, smoking ruin. The White House has been razed. Countless thousands are dead. This is the apocalyptic scene terrorists hope to create if they ever get their hands on a nuclear bomb. This computer generated image posted on terror forums depict what would happen if a nuclear attack took place in Washington D.C. It appeared as rumours swept the Internet that the FBI was warning that an Al Qaeda video was about to be released urging militants to use weapons of mass destruction to attack the West. The information was said to be coming from ‘groups that monitor Islamic militant websites’.

Now surely you’d label this as fear mongering? With a title like “Al-Qaeda’s terrifying vision of a devastated America in the wake of a nuclear attack” you’d struggle not to.

But it becomes ultimately very funny when you realise that this isn’t the product of some brain twisted man mental hellbent on the destuction of Capitol Hill, but actually promotional imagery from a computer game, made by americans.

Unsurprisingly the Daily Mail have yet to remove their “media coup”. Good work!

Getting Connected To Dead

Sometimes I wish I had a warrant card and was a fully paid up member of the filth - I’d spend all day cruising the roads looking to take down muppets swerving with reckless abandon between lanes, cutting people up and braking far too late all because they’re yapping away on their mobile phones, hand glued to ear.

I’d also ruthlessly pursue all those with bluetooth earpieces, because they look like dickwads.

In ASDA last week we saw a guy noisily concluding a business deal whilst buying smoked salmon. Obviously he was trying to give over a sense of importance. I mean no one else in their right mind would be screaming down their bluedick ear piece concluding a sale in the middle of a supermarket. Unfortuately he just came across as a dickhead, mainly because he’d just sold 20 cases of sunglasses to a chain of £1 shops. BIG BUSINESS!

Best. Logos. Ever.

I’m chucking these in Art, purely because i don’t believe they were accidental. At all. How stupid would everybody involved have to be if they didn’t notice the glaring entendres?

ABSTRACT

Its been a while, but you know, ever since BT shafted me and chalked one up for the massively incompetent customer service-less bastard award by changing our number and cancelling our broadband I’ve been going through my old photos rather than going through other peoples old photos on Flickr.

Anyway these aren’t old photos at all, they’re NEW. All shot on a cheap 35mm disposable camera. At my works Christmas Party. They’re much better than drunk peoples faces, much better.

Worlds Biggest Swimming Pool

I’m quite a keen swimmer - but this had me rubbing my goggles.

san-alfonso-googleearth.jpg

The worlds biggest swimming pool, San Alfonso del Mar is 1km in length and 10 times longer than the previous Guinness world record holder in Morroco. The revolutionary clear water artificial lagoon, transparent to a depth of 35 meters and unprecedented in design and construction methods, are the brainchild of Crystal Lagoons founder, biochemist and Chilean businessman Fernando Fischmann. Equivalent in size to an incredible 6,000 standard domestic pools, details of its technology are to be unveiled for the first time at Cityscape Dubai later this month.

Art Imitates Life; Lego Imitates Art

Following on from the mindbending lego Escher, i came across the following photoset on Flickr which is absolutely sublime. Re-enacting ? famous paintings and scenes from movies and tv with Lego, there are some great images, like Nighthawks and The Last Supper.

Theres even some other imaginative artwork (original as far as I can tell) made from lego and an overhead projector:

Lego Escher

Probably the most time consuming geek hobby ever, Andrew Lipson makes lego models. Of everything.

My personal favourite (and probably everybody elses personal favourite judging by Digg and Del.icio.us) is Eschers “Relativity” - completed in lego, with little lego men. The attention to detail is amazing, just check out the description for detailed breakdown and step by step images - it took 3 months!

Relativity

Also worth a mention are the various strips, surfaces and saddle points made for the mathematical sculptures page - obviously also all made from lego.

All Hot Air

I’m really liking the idea of going to a hot air balloon festival to take some photos. That probably sounds boring, but some of the images I’ve seen on Flickr are absolutely amazing.

Hot Air Balloon Landing

Balloon Festivals are a popular place to watch balloons fly. There are hundreds of balloon festivals around the world each year, with the majority occurring in the summer or fall. Not only will you get to see balloons up close, but most festivals have other attractions like entertainment and food, making a festival a great family outing. Some festivals allow spectators to walk amongst the balloons, while others may keep spectators away from the pilots and crews. Be prepared to get up early, since some of the flights are likley to take place at dawn.

Balloon Panorama

Looks like the season starts next May (something to do with the rain ;) so I’m off - i don’t suppose anyone else is interested?

Spell With Flickr

I love playing with imagery, and this is one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen to access the Flickr API yet. Spell With Flickr is a php/java “tool” that allows you to spell out any word with photos taken from the multitudes hosted on Flickr. All you need to do is type in the word you want to form - as easy as that. Click on any letter to change it for another image until you are happy with what you got and copy the code that is generated for you.

K i E R A is for… N
D E L A N E Y

So whilst its cool to spell out your name, or random insults… it does get slightly old after a few minutes. But then simplicity is effective in small doses.
